I’ve got a great resource for you! My friend, Doug Stevenson, has just released his new book: Never Be Boring Again – Make Your Business Presentations Capture Attention, Inspire Action, and Produce Results. I have a copy and it is fantastic. It is an inspiring, detail-rich, unconventional book on the most effective presentation skill you can possess – how to strategically use stories to make your points and captivate your listeners. I’ve worked with Doug and he is really good! The book covers his Story Theater Method, which includes how to choose your stories, how to craft them using a nine-step formula, and how to act out key parts of the story using comedy and drama skills. It’s really some of the most amazing philosophy and technique you will ever read.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – State legislators, small business owners, and activists in the fight for economic development now have a new web tool in their arsenal. Launched today, the Office of Advocacy’s web page on its initiative for state regulatory policy offers a wealth of information on current state laws, proposed legislation, statistics, information and much more.
The new web tool, located at www.sba.gov/advo/laws/law_modeleg.html, is the latest step in Advocacy’s promotion of small business friendly regulatory policy at the state level. In December 2002, Advocacy presented draft model regulatory flexibility legislation to the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) for consideration by state legislators. ALEC endorsed the model legislation earlier this year.
Since then many states have taken steps to encourage small business friendly regulations. North Dakota and Colorado both enacted new legislation and Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney signed an Executive Order giving small businesses a voice in his state’s regulatory process.
The legislation, modeled after the federal Regulatory Flexibility Act (RFA), would require state agencies to consider their impact on small business before imposing regulatory mandates. By listening to small businesses, state agencies can ensure that small business resources that would have been spent on over burdensome new regulations are instead available for hiring new employees and making new investments. At the same time, agencies still meet their regulatory goals such as higher environmental quality, greater travel safety, better workplace conditions, and increased family financial security.
Currently, states offer a patchwork of laws that protect small business owners and their employees from excessive regulatory mandates. Some states offer protections similar to the RFA that mirror the role of the Office of Advocacy. Other states offer little or no protection from the one-size-fits-all regulatory mentality.
For more information on small business friendly regulation for states, visit the new Office of Advocacy web page at www.sba.gov/advo/laws/law_modeleg.html.
“Total Logistics Control” is in a nutshell the result of a six step analytical, development and implementation process that incorporates cost justifiable technologies to deliver your product to customers with acceptable service levels at a minimum total landed cost.
We first complete a thorough methods improvement analysis of the entire procurement and fulfillment process. We use a Business Process Analysis tool developed for re-engineering projects to analyze the base system and then perform extensive Work Simplification analysis to identify alternatives that minimize average and total process time and costs. We develop standard operating methods, layouts and procedures for all common warehouse labor operations, and develop a rational storage location scheme for the entire facility. Finally, we generate Euclidean location coordinates for all storage and staging locations in the facility to provide an accurate basis for measuring travel distances and time. If you utilize an internal delivery fleet we study and improve transportation operations as well.
We discuss these recommendations with your Senior Management and develop an Implementation Plan.
We train your supervisors and laborers to work with and use these procedures.
We develop and install computer generated Engineered Performance Standards for all common direct labor operations. We have found that the differences between how long it should take (Engineered Performance Standards) and how long it has taken in the past (Historic Standards) are often forty percent or more!
We train your supervisors to use the Labor Productivity Reporting and Scheduling system to identify problems and take swift corrective action whenever performance does not meet expectations.
We audit the system annually, and incorporate new and proven technologies using reasonable return on investment criteria.
Our staff consultants have more than a century of expertise developing and improving warehousing and delivery operations worldwide, and we have completed successful engagements for more than 260 distribution and manufacturing companies.
We would be happy to visit your facility and provide an accurate estimate of potential improvements and cost savings. We charge only for any travel and lodging expenses incurred and will prepare and present a detailed proposal of services that will include strategies and suggestions that will in itself save your company money. Please feel free to contact me directly for further information and to discuss your specific needs.
