A plethora of useful information to help steer you in the right direction...
When I encourage my clients to reward
themselves for a job well done, a huge percentage of them say something
to the effect, "Nah, just
knowing that the job was done well is reward enough for me." I agree,
however, the six-year-old child we call our subconscious has no idea
what you're talking about and they want a tangible reward, even if it's
only a huge "ATTA GRRRL or ATTA BOY!" Rewarding yourself, your
group or your team produces results far beyond simply getting the job
done. It paves the way for excitement, loyalty, dedication, excellence,
persistence and a never-say-quit attitude both individually and as a
team. Personal rewards are the grease up the ramp to success.
I'm writing this newsletter on the day of Phyllis' first official book
signing for her book E2. She has worked incredibly hard, jumped through
every hoop placed in front of her, gathered a fantastic team to support
and encourage her and she is elegant enough to lavish each of them with
the praise they truly deserve for the jobs they have done for her. Her
rewards for herself for this milestone have been to share a banana split
with me (we do this a couple of times a year to celebrate BIG events),
get her nails done, buy a few really nice outfits for her media tour
and have a massage. All of these things help turn the mundane tasks into
simply part of the process of success. Rewarding each step in the process
helps to build the momentum needed to complete the projects.
Each time you reward yourself, the process itself reinforces the habit
of rewarding the behavior you wish to encourage so that your subconscious
is fully engaged in your quest for success. Having all the parts of yourself
pulling in the same direction is the best way to enhance your success
rate in every area of your life. There is no such thing as a separation
of business and personal when it comes to rewards. You and your team
are always personally involved in the business. The old buzz-saw, "It's
just business." is a great way to become very lonely in business.
Begin to make all of life (business and personal) rewarding for everyone
to work with you and/or your team.
Create a corporate culture of rewards. Successful relationships are
based on mutual respect and the best way to show your respect is to reward
the actions of someone so they really understand that you do appreciate
them, their contribution and their behavior.
One of the big surprises in most surveys of employees is that money
is never in the top five reasons a person stays in their job. The two
top reasons are having a boss that listens to them and having a best
friend at work. Encouragement is the same reward we use when teaching
our children to do a new task. What makes us think that being an adult
changes this deep need in us? It doesn't change, we simply forget sometimes
to be nice to our selves and others to the point we tell them how much
we appreciate what they are doing for us and our projects.
Now go tell at least two people how much their efforts mean to you.
Yes, now. Go ahead and tell them now, it won't hurt you. Soon you'll
enjoy the process and more people will want to be on your team. . . .
Great, nice going. Now, go do it again.
